About Inhotim

The Instituto Inhotim is a Contemporary Art Center and Botanical Garden located in Brumadinho, 60 km away from Belo Horizonte, MG. Its 140 hectare visitation area is made up of forest fragments and gardens, with an extensive collection of rare tropical species and where contemporary art works of international relevance are installed.

Inhotim was conceived by the Minas-born entrepreneur Bernardo Paz and was opened to the public in 2006. It is strongly committed with the development of the community in which it is included. The Institute participates actively in the making of policies for the improvement of the quality of life in the region, either in partnerships with the public administration and with the private sector or acting independently.

The structure and organization of the space guarantee a singular venue. In addition to breaking away from the architecture and the exhibition and visitation modes that are associated to conventional museums, the Institute offers to its visitors an opportunity of fruition and brings works of art and environmental circuits close together. Over 2 million people have visited this singular venue, one of the main touristic and cultural destinations in Minas Gerais and in Brazil.

The Inhotim Institute is a nonprofit private entity qualified by the Minas Gerais State Administration and by the Federal Administration as a Public Interest Non-Governmental Organization (OSCIP, initials in Portuguese). Inhotim actions are supported by the Federal Act for Cultural Incentive of the Ministry of Culture.

Contemporary Art
Paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, videos and installations by over 100 renowned Brazilian and international artists from 30 different countries make up Instituto Inhotim’s collection. From a collection of over 1.300 works, about 500 pieces are currently on display. The pieces have been produced in Brazil and abroad from the 1960s to the current days. They are located outdoors on the Inhotim Botanical Garden or exhibited in galleries.

Four of the 23 pavilions are dedicated to temporary exhibits – the Lago, Fonte, Praça and Mata galleries. Each gallery has approximately 1000 square meters and large open spaces which allow for a versatile use of the area for showing videos, installations, paintings or sculptures. Every two years these spaces present a new show to introduce the Institute’s new acquisitions and to create re-interpretations of the collection. In addition, new individual projects are inaugurated every year, making Inhotim a place of constant evolution.

Botanical Garden
Instituto Inhotim is concerned with the environment and is located amid a forest area which is a remnant of the Atlantic Rain Forest and the Cerrado, or Brazilian savanna: two of the richest environments in terms of biodiversity and, at the same time, two of the most endangered environments in the planet, regarded as world hotspots.

From the 140 hectares of the area made up of secondary semideciduous seasonal forests, 35 are gardens. Adding to this extensive portion of land is an area protected as Natural Heritage Private Reserve which, since May 2010, is aimed at collaborating permanently with the conservation of biodiversity by connecting Inhotim to the south of the Espinhaço Mountain Chain, considered as one of the most important plant diversity centers in the world.

The landscape works for the exuberant gardens which would eventually make up Instituto Inhotim initiated in the mid-1980s. Along time, numerous species of palm trees and native Brazilian and exotic trees from several regions in the world were acquired and adapted themselves very well to the grounds. The gardens value the luxuriance of the flora and integrate it in a spontaneous, harmonic way with the landscape and the lakes by means of pathways, stairways and patios built upon natural quartzite rock formations. These innovations have become popular in Brazilian landscape art.

In 2010 the Institute’s expressive collection allowed for its recognition as a Botanical Garden with a botanical collection. This collection is made up by close to 5,000 species, out of which two families are noteworthy: the Palm Trees (Arecaceae) with over a thousand species and varieties, and the Philodendron, Anthurium and Calla Lily (Araceae) with over 400 species and forms – regarded as one of the largest in the world. It is also important to point out that the wide botanical collection combined with the robust structure of the Educational Plant Nursery allows for carrying out research and educational activities that collaborate for the ex situ conservation of the flora.

Inhotim has been more and more committed with the Brazilian Network of Botanical Gardens for the development of strategies to collaborate with attaining the goals for the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation.

Educational Actions
About 1,500 students from the public and private schools in Brumadinho and Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Area visit Inhotim every week. The educational programs promote a number of actions to bring society closer to values related to art, environment, community empowerment and cultural diversity.

With the proposal of aiding the critical development of the students who visit Inhotim and raising awareness on the current situation of the environment, its conservation status or how art permeates our lives, the Institute works on two fronts: Art and Education, and Environmental Education.

In addition to the partnerships with schools, city halls and city and state Education departments, the Institute also offers free educational guided visits to the public in general in order to contextualize visitors who wish to know more about what the park offers in terms of Contemporary Art, Botany and Environment.

For visitors, Inhotim also offers a visit program which takes place in scheduled hours and pre-determined locations.

– The art theme visit provides a meeting between educators and visitors to discuss artists and artworks from the collection. The visit offers a conceptual outline of works on display. Starting points may be a gallery, an artist, or a specific route within the park. On average, this type of visit lasts 1 hour and happens on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, at 2:30 p.m.

– The environmental theme tour allows visitors to walk through the gardens, see part of the landscaped botanical collection, as well as to appreciate the ornamental ponds, waterfowls and other elements that make up this space. This tour lasts one and a half hours and happens on Saturdays and Sundays, at 10:30 a.m. (leaving from the reception).

– The panoramic visit provides an overview of the dynamics of Inhotim. By walking through a certain area of the park, the visit emphasizes landscape design and works located in the gardens of Inhotim. Lasting, on average, one and a half hours, the panoramic visit takes place from Tuesdays to Sundays and on holidays, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. This visit leaves from the reception area.

Social Actions
In 2007 Instituto Inhotim initiated its relationship and commitment with the development of Brumadinho. This is the city in which the Institute is located, in the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Area. The municipality has an area of 640 square kilometers and a population of 34,013 inhabitants (IBGE Brazilian census authority, 2010 ) and is divided into 5 districts: Brumadinho, Aranha, Piedade do Paraopeba, São José do Paraopeba and Conceição de Itaguá. The rural population is distributed into districts and settlements, including six quilombola (former slaves) communities. Four of these communities have been recognized by the Palmares Foundation for the preservation of Afro-Brazilian Culture, connected to the Ministry of Culture.

The commitment to the social development of the local population led to the creation of the Department of Inclusion and Community Empowerment, which has operated since 2007 in three areas: Music, Art and Culture in the

Paraopeba Valley, Land Development and CIMP (acronym for Centro Inhotim de Memória e Patrimônio, or the Inhotim Center for Memory and Heritage).

One of the main goals of this Department is to strengthen the social capital of the municipality with the support of community or social leaders and organizations. All actions aim at the autonomy of the subjects, and have the people and the social groups as the central object of their work.

Inhotim aims at the sustainability of the programs, the collection, management of resources and the increase in the capacity of the organizations, strengthening new or already existing leaderships. All of the projects proposed seek to guarantee the accessibility, interaction and social inclusion of the population to the concepts and processes developed by Instituto Inhotim.

Gastronomy
At Inhotim, visitors have several food choices, from fast snacks to more elaborated dishes. The Inhotim Restaurant has a pleasant environment and is integrated with the gardens and the contemporary art collection of the institution. The menu consists of an excellent and varied salad bar, à la carte dishes, extensive wine list, and also a variety of desserts.

Created by designer Paulo Henrique Bicalho, known as Ganso (Goose), the Inhotim Bar is a pleasant space to have a drink with your friends and enjoy the delicious international cuisine. The menu has à la carte dishes, appetizers and light snacks. The Bar do Ganso is a bona fide art gallery with pieces signed by renowned Brazilian designers, special lighting and an ambiance referring back to the 50s and 70s.

The cafeteria is located at the Burle Marx Center for Education and Culture and is the ideal place to enjoy a delicious coffee, the specialty of the house. Café do Teatro also has several options of hot and cold beverages, sandwiches, snacks and sweets.

The Oiticica Restaurant is located next to the work Penetrável Magic Square #5, De Luxe. It is a pay-by-weight buffet and the menu includes salads and choices of hot casseroles. The restaurant opens on weekends from 12 noon to 4:30 p.m.

Inhotim visitors can also check out other gastronomic spaces as the Pizzeria, the Hot Dog stand and snack bars located in the Fonte, True Rouge and Miguel Rio Branco galleries. There are sandwiches, pastries, hot dogs, cheese rolls (pão de queijo), juices, soft drinks, among other things.

Saritur Bus Transport

Leaving from the Belo Horizonte Bus Station (Rodoviária) from Tuesdays to Sundays at 9 a.m. (platform F2) and returning at 4:30 pm on weekdays. On weekends and holidays, the return trip is at 5:30 pm.

Location

Inhotim is located in the municipality of Brumadinho, 60 kilometers away from Belo Horizonte (approximately one hour and fifteen minutes). The access road is at km 500 of BR 381 highway on the Belo Horizonte – São Paulo direction.

You can also reach Inhotim by BR 040 highway (approximately 1 and a half hours). The access road is at the entrance of Retiro do Chalé on BR 040 highway on the Belo Horizonte – Rio de Janeiro direction.

Gift Shops
The Inhotim gift shops are located at the entrance of the Institute and offer items for decoration and everyday use, books, toys, clay pieces, vases, plants and regional cuisine products.

Admission Fee
On Wednesdays, admission is free of charge. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, it is R$ 25. On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, admission is R$ 40. Half price for senior citizens (60+) and students (upon presentation of valid school/college ID). Children up to 5 years of age do not pay.

Special program celebrates 2 million visitors at Inhotim

In August, Inhotim reached the 2-million-visitor mark. These visitors came from the most diverse places and realities since the park was first opened to public visitation back in 2006. To celebrate the presence of those who keep the Institute alive, the second half of 2015 will bring new exhibits, performances and concerts with major Brazilian musicians. Among the attractions are Maria Bethânia, Zélia Duncan and Jaques Morelembaum, and Luiz Melodia, in addition to a tribute to Fernando Brant. Check out everything about the artists performing at Inhotim in the next few months, as well as about the new works on display at the park.

SEPTEMBER

Sept 5, 3 p.m. – Dançar o mundo – das ruas à web 2.0 [Dancing the world – from the streets to the web 2.0], performance by Ana Pi
Inhotim Theater (admission by order of arrival – 210 seats)

Artist Ana Pi puts on a performance based on urban dances from the outskirts and underground contexts of major cities all over the world. The performance shows the artist’s relationship with Brazilian funk dance as well as with African and North-American rhythms, creating an explicit dialog between national and international rhythms. There will be a discussion with the audience after the performance.

The audience will be granted access to the theater on a first-come-first-served basis, 30 minutes before the performance. Buy your ticket to enter the park on September 5.

Sept 12, 3 p.m. – Lucas Santtana
Magic Square Stage (admission by order of arrival. Capacity: 1,500 people)

Celebrating his 15-year career anniversary on tour with one of his latest albums “Sobre Noites e Dias” [About Days and Nights], Lucas Santtana brings a lively dancing performance to Inhotim. With tracks inspired by narratives of the everyday life, such as the amusing “Montanha Russa Sentimental” [Sentimental

Roller-coaster], the Bahia-born singer also sings some of his hits from past works.

Sept 13, 3 p.m. – Luiz Melodia, voz e violão [Luiz Melodia, vocals and guitar]
Magic Square Stage (admission by order of arrival. Capacity: 1,500 people)

On the road for over 40 years, Luiz Melodia has become more and more versatile and creative, composing songs inspired in blues, choro and samba. The concert features his greatest hits such as “Pérola Negra”, “Magrelinha” and “Estácio, eu e você”. Together with Renato Piau, who plays the guitar and is the singer’s right-hand man on stage, Melodia reinvents himself in each performance, surprising his audience with new arrangements for his well-known hits. Buy your ticket to enter the park on September 13.

Sept 19 – 3 p.m. – Inhotim Youth Orchestra

The participation of Inhotim Youth Orchestra in the Inhotim Em Cena program is marked by special concerts. The Orchestra is made up of Inhotim School of Strings’ students, conducted by César Timóteo, artistic director for the project. With a diversified program, the group brings different music styles to the public, in appreciation of instrumental music. The Orchestra relies on 30 instrumentalists, including violinists, cellists, and bassists. The repertoire includes works by composers such as Mozart, Vivaldi, Villa Lobos, Tom Jobim and Milton Nascimento.

Sept 20, 3 p.m. – Carminho
Magic Square Stage (admission by order of arrival. Capacity: 1,500 people)

The Portuguese fado singer and composer is the daughter of Teresa Siqueira, who is also a fado singer and one of the most talented and innovative singers in her generation. In this concert, she will also perform other music genres such as Portuguese popular music, Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), jazz, pop and rock. This is the first time Carminho will be performing in Minas Gerais, after having sold out concerts in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil, the artist has recorded with Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, Nana Caymmi and Marisa Monte. In Inhotim Em Cena, she will perform songs from her third album, “Canto”.

OCTOBER

Oct 1 – New temporary exhibits

On October 1st, Inhotim opens several works in the collection. Among the novelties are the video-installations by South-African artist William Kentridge. In 2013, a traveling exhibit dedicated to the artist’s production went to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre, and he is now bringing the work “I am not me, the horse is not mine” to Inhotim. The work is made up of eight enormous projections and will be installed in a 600m2 shed. The work is expected to be one of the Institute’s main attractions in 2015. It has been on display at the Tate Modern, in London, and at the MoMA, in New York, and will replace “The Murder of Crows”, by Janet Cardiff and Georges Bures Miller.

The exhibit “Do Objeto para o Mundo – Coleção Inhotim” [From the object to the world – Inhotim Collection] will be on display at Galeria Fonte, featuring works which are part of the collection but had never been shown at the park. Over 50 works from the 1950s to date are part of the collection excerpt which examines the formation of the field of contemporary art based on the collection as well as on the institution’s program, opened to the public in 2006. The exhibit has been in Belo Horizonte and São Paulo, totaling over 100 thousand visitors.

Oct 1, 3 p.m. – Bixiga 70

Magic Square Stage (admission by order of arrival. Capacity: 1,500 people)

The opening of the new temporary exhibits will be celebrated with a concert by the Bixiga 70 band, which is launching its third album. The group’s rhythm is an invitation to dance and goes through dub and reggae, cumbia and carimbó, ethio-jazz and samba-jazz. Their music is created based on phrase and solos, harmonies and dynamics, clefs and improvisations. The 10 members of the band deliver a highly danceable performance.

Oct 3 and 4, 3p.m. – Zélia Duncan and Jaques Morelembaum

Magic Square Stage (tickets for this concert must be purchased separately – 1,500 people)

The artist has partnered up with Jaques Morelembaum to pay tribute to Milton Nascimento at Inhotim. Milton’s songs will be interpreted in a very special way in a vocal and cello recital-like concert. The concert is not restrained by timelines. “Both mine and Jaques’s affective memory is filled with Milton’s lifework, and that was the criterion we used to choose the songs”, says Zélia. The songs chosen include “Canção Amiga”, “Cravo e Canela”, “Encontros e Despedidas”, “O que foi feito deverá”, “Ponta de Areia” and “San Vicente”.

The concert will take place at a reserved area. Tickets will be sold separately at BRL80 (full price). Oct 10 and 11, 3p.m. – Tribute to Fernando Brant – Canções da América [Unencounters]

Friends of composer Fernando Brant and voices of the new generation of music made in Minas will gather at Inhotim in a performance intended to pay tribute to

the artist. Among the guest artists are Toninho Horta, Tavinho Moura, Beto Guedes, Flávio Venturini, Quarteto Cobra Coral, Amaranto, Juliana Perdigão and Marina Machado. The concert was conceived by Murilo Antunes, with musical direction by Flávio Henrique and art direction by Antônio Grassi.

The concert will take place at a reserved area. Tickets will be sold separately at BRL80 (full price). Oct 17, 11a.m. – Vocal Line

Tamboril (free access for park visitors)

The 30 members of this Danish group as conducted by Jens Johansen. Throughout its 23 years of existence, Danish group Vocal Line has been greatly acknowledged all over Europe and in several other places in the world. The group has performed in important European and American festivals.

Oct 17 and 18, 3p.m. – Concert “Bethânia e as Palavras” [Bethânia and the Words]

Magic Square Stage (tickets for this concert must be purchased separately – 1,500 people)

The concert “Bethânia e as Palavras” will take to Inhotim a collection of poems and texts chosen by Maria Bethânia. The performance is a blend of literature and music. During the concert, the artist reads works by poets of all generations such as Guimarães Rosa, Manuel Bandeira, Cecília Meireles, Sophia de Mello Breyner, Padre Antonio Vieira, Caetano Veloso, Fausto Fawcet, Ferreira Gullar, among others. The reading is blended into parts of well-known Brazilian and Portuguese songs, such as ABC do Sertão (Luiz

Gonzaga), Romaria (Renato Teixeira), Estranha Forma de Vida (Amália Rodrigues) and Marinheiro Só (public ownership/adapted by Caetano Veloso).

Oct 24, 3p.m. – Ars Nova

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of composer Hans-Joachim Koellreutter’s birth, Ars Nova – Coral da UFMG, conducted by Iara Fricke Matte presents a special concert featuring contemporary classical music. The concert also marks the global debut of two pieces: Três Canções Sacras [Three Sacred Songs], by Minas-born composer Eduardo Ribeiro, and Trois Chansons, by Daniel Knaggs. Ars Nova – Coral da UFMG is representing Brazil in this project, for which Knaggs has invited choirs all over the world to create their own interpretations of the tribute the American had paid to Ravel and Debussy.

Oct 25, 3p.m. – Concert: Cobra, by John Zorn

Magic Square Stage (admission by order of arrival. Capacity: 1,500 people)

In this concert, Coletivo Distante performs improvisations using several instrumental set-ups, making versions of the musical game piece Cobra (1984), by New York composer John Zorn. The game uses signs and signals between the musicians to articulate a series of improvisations, each one with its own rules.

NOVEMBER

Nov 26 – Opening of Galeria Claudia Andujar

On November 26, 2015, Inhotim will open Galeria Claudia Andujar, a project which has been developed over the past five years by the Institute. The space will have 1,600m2 and will be completely dedicated to the work of the Swiss photographer who has been based in Brazil since the 1950s. Throughout the years, she has photographed the life of the Yanomami, an indigenous people living in the Amazon Rainforest, on the border between Brazil and Venezuela. Her work was essential for the demarcation of the Yanomami territory back in 1992, being closely connected to the history of Brazil. Her gallery at Inhotim will gather over 500 photos taken by the artist during the time she lived with indigenous populations, as well as during other visits she made after that period.

Contemporary Music at Inhotim

This coming Sunday, 10/19, the 2014 Inhotim em Cena project closes its program with the Contemporary Music Series. In this fourth edition, joined by American singer Martha Herr, the Minas Gerais group Sonante 21 will perform the play Pierrot Lunaire, one of the most influential works of music in the 20th century. The concert will also premiere a composition by Minas-born artist Rogério Vasconcelos, made especially for Inhotim.

Written in 1912 by Arnold Schoenberg, Pierrot Lunaire comprises three sets of seven songs, based on poems by Belgian poet Albert Giraud and translated into German. The composition has an atonal and expressionistic character and uses sprechstimme, intermediate vocal technique between singing and speaking.

 

Sonante 21

Created in 2009 by musician Fernando Rocha, the Minas Gerais group is dedicated to studying and performing chamber pieces by contemporary composers, with emphasis on Brazilian compositions from the second half of the 20th century and 21st century. The following artists will take part in this performance: Guida Borghoff (piano), Rommel Fernandes (violin), Elise Pittenger (cello), Maurício Freire (flute) and Alexandre Silva (clarinet).

Naná Vasconcelos in Brumadinho

“The body is the best tool, the rest is a consequence of it”.That is how musician Naná Vasconcelos, one of the greatest percussionists in the world, opened his percussion workshop in the former-slave community of Marinhos, district of Brumadinho, which took place on 08/30. In the afternoon, children and youths taking part in Inhotim’s percussion musical initiation project could talk to the artist and find out new ways to make music.

 

First, the rhythm was marked with the feet. Then, Naná encouraged them all to use their hands, and, finally, their voices. No traditional musical instruments were used.This composition of movements and sounds allowed participants to become aware of their own bodies, as well as to work on respiratory awareness and on the sense of group. Even though the gestures were simple, they carry the strength of Afro-Brazilian musicality, which is a striking feature of the former-slave culture, and are essential to preserve this culture. “Here, in the community, we are born with music being part of us.It is a gift that is passed on generation after generation by the Congado and Mozambique Guards”, says 14-year old Rhayane Estefanie Alves, who took part in the workshop and participates in Inhotim’s percussion project..

No domingo, Naná Vasconcelos abriu a programação de grandes shows do Inhotim em Cena. Acompanhado do multi-instrumentista Lui Coimbra, o percussionista levou o berimbau da capoeira para o centro do palco, nos jardins do Instituto. Em uma mistura de brasilidade e som erudito, planejamento e improvisação, os artistas criaram um repertório singular que emocionou o público. “Percussão é símbolo de vida. Se não tiver percussão, quer dizer, se o coração não bater, não tem vida”, define Naná.

Inhotim’s cultural program for the second semester is filled with special shows and great artists performing as part of the Inhotim em Cena project. Check out what we have prepared for you and save the dates: 

 

August

On August 15, 16 and 17, Companhia de Dança do Palácio das Artes will enchant Inhotim visitors. The group will debut the choreography especially created by Dani Lima for the Institute. A must-see! The performance will take place at 2:30 p.m., in the park’s gardens. Also, on the 31st, musician Naná Vasconcelos performs with multi-instrumentalist Lui Coimbra under the Tamboril tree, at 3 p.m.

 

September

September weekends are filled with good music. The program starts with the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra with its annual concert at Inhotim on the 7th, at 4 p.m.  On the following Saturday, 13, singer Lenine joins the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra to play songs written by himself, at 4 p.m., near the Tamboril tree. According to him, the experience will be unique: “The sense of collectivity is the greatest thing about playing my music with many other artists. When this happens in an art-oriented space, then, it is transcendental.   The parameter is totally different, stakes are higher. I´m filled with expectations and looking forward to visiting Inhotim, I will take the opportunity to visit the galleries and the Vanda Orchid Greenhouse”, says Lenine, who loves orchids, one of the plant collections at the Inhotim Botanical Garden.

 

On the 21st, at 3 p.m., the Contemporary Music Series brings works by Brazilian Sérgio Rodrigo and Palestinian composer Samir Odeh-Tamimi, who lives in Berlim. The concert is the result of a partnership between Inhotim and Festival Artes Vertentes, which takes place in Tiradentes, in the state of Minas Gerais. Coordinated by pianist Luis Gustavo Carvalho, art director for the Festival, the event will rely on the participation of German, English, Japanese and Brazilian musicians.

 

October

The Contemporary Music Series closes the year with a concert by the Sonante 21 group, joined by American singer Martha Herr, at 3 p.m., at the Inhotim Theater. They will perform Pierrot Lunaire, a series of songs composed by Arnold Schönberg, and which has become one of the most influential pieces in 20th century music. The performance also marks the premiere of a piece by Minas-born composer Rogério Vasconcelos, especially requested by Inhotim to the artist for this occasion. Tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the performance, on a first-come-first-served basis.
